In July the Windhund set sail for East Africa where another encounter with the Zanzibari Zumari duo Sekembuke & Siga took place. The tour kicked off with a concert at Mtoni Palace, the birth place of Princess Salme.

A four day workshop at Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) followed where the Austrian musicians encountered more Zanzibari musicians including the legendary Bi Kidude.

Before heading to the mainland the musicians played at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), just ahead of the screening of the World Cup final. Sekembuke & Siga blew their zumari horns from the massive walls of the Old Fort with the Windhund joining in from the stage.

At TaSUBa – the Institute for Arts and Culture Bagamoyo the musicians found an attentive audience that was quite astonished by this unusual encounter of musicians.

Likewise in Dar es Salaam at the CCBRT mobile outreach in Temeke the audience was quite amazed by this interplay and the zumari horns that they had probably never seen before.

On Monday night, Otto Lechner & Windhund were – after successful performances in Linz and Graz – once more joined by the Zanzibari Zumari horns duo Sekembuke & Siga – the first occasion for the Viennese audience to experience the merging of two very different sonic spheres! With a sold out Porgy & Bess, the concert marked the beginning of the 6-days-festival “Began in Africa”.

After a mellow intro by Otto Lechner, Melissa Coleman, Matthias Jakisic, Karl Ritter and Peter Rosmanith, the two Zumari horn players entered by striding through the auditorium from the upper to the ground level… an effective entrée!

Especially in the second half of the gig, some great improvisational passages showed, that – though, as Otto Lechner stated, each concert with the Zumari horn musicians is like a completely new encounter – the traditional sounds of Zanzibar and the improvisation by the Austrian artists, provide a common ground for new explorations…

On Tuesday 1st June, the Windhund and the Zumari horn players Sekembuke & Siga met in Graz, the provincial capital of Styria. After walking the charming City center with a look at the “blue bubble” of Kunsthaus a concert was staged at the Orpheum hall. Quite a crowd was listening very attentively to the approach and encounter of different scales and sound worlds. The musical journey was meandering like the Zumaris walking across the audience. Big applause!

After their rousing performances at LINZFEST 2010, the five musicians from Zanzibar and Zimbabwe - Shaaban Muasi Vuai aka Sekembuke, Hussein Fereji Azani aka Siga (who played with Otto Lechner & Windhund), Tendai Manatsa aka Bomba, Josh Meck aka Shimbo and Samm Farai Monro aka Comrade Fatso - went on a retreat to Harrachsthal in the backwoods of Mühlviertel north-easterly of Linz.

The host Karl Katzinger aka John Tylo from Backwoods Association expected them to stay overnight in his old farmhouse and to perform at the Cafe Druzba next door. First, a sunny afternoon provided for the right mood to relax and to teach Sekembuke and Bomba to scythe whilst Monique and Rose prepared a range of dishes East African style.

Towards evening Siga and Sekembuke started their procession in the backyard blowing the Zumari horns and pulling the crowd into the venue where Comrade Fatso and Chabvondoka took over with their radical street poetry and pulsating music. A short video homage by Michael Pilz dedicated the evening as a tribute to the late Keith Goddard with Peter Kuthan showing some slides about his legacy, the Tonga.Online project in Zimbabwe (www.mulonga.net).

Thanks to the lively interest and participation of the audience the event lasted “till late”, way beyond midnight and saw some musicians jamming including the host Karl on the trumpet - a true Pungwe and nice farewell to Comrade Fatso and Chabvondoka!

Not only for the LINZFEST organiser Wolfgang Almer but also according to many other participants in the audience, this concert was wonderful and – together with the Poetic Pilgrimage from Jamaica – one of the highlights of LINZFEST 2010.

Comrade Fatso from Zimbabwe, who was also lining up at Linzfest together with Tendai Manatsa and Josh Meck, after listening to the performance: “Great show, guys!! Really powerful collaboration.. Blew me away! more fire to you!”

The Windhund are often embarking on cross-border projects - not only in the geographical, but also in the artistic-musical sense. It is especially the inter-linkage of music and poetry that thereby creates a new dimension of artistic expression. The group has repeatedly engaged with the music world of Africa: Together with the Moroccan singer Kadero, Otto Lechner has founded the Vienna Rai Orchestra, which has made the Arabic influenced music of North Africa establish itself in Vienna. In May last year they played together with Siga & Sekembuke, the Zumari Duo from Zanzibar in several places in Austria from Melk to Vienna after the duo had participated at the Parade where the audience of Linz grew very fond of them. Now the duo has been invited to Austria again to perform with the Windhund at the Linzfest 2010, at the Orpheum Graz and the Porgy&Bess in Vienna.

In July the Windhund will set sail for East Africa where another encounter with the Zumari duo will take place in Zanzibar upon invitation from the Dhow Countries Music Academy.

Already at the end of January there was a review and planning workshop for Tonga.Online project held in Binga / Zimbabwe with members of Simonga and Maliko groups attending. Everybody applauded the participation at Parade in Linz / Austria as a major achievement for the promotion of Tonga music and culture. Some photos of the event in Linz were shown around and the Parade video documentary screened again with cheerful comments by Louis Maanje from Maliko. Copies of the documentary were handed over to both groups, Simonga and Maliko, and to some partners and stakeholders to appreciate their contributions and support.

Josiah Moyo: “A brief review of the Linz09 tour was shared during the review meeting, giving a view of the parade and the expectations of the entourage and the views of the Austrian people towards the Budima culture. After the meeting, the participants had a chance to see photos of the Linz parade and Mr. Louis Manje explained the Linz photos to participants.

A moment of silence was observed in honor of the late Keith Goddard. This was done at a video show which started after dinner. The participants braved to watch a 73 minutes video play. This DVD film is a compacted documentary of all the three days parade of which I urge everybody to take time to watch it. You will be thrilled to watch it over and over again, analyzing the performance, how people interacted and united not with language but with rhythm.

If you watch this DVD, yes you will strongly agree with inserts on the inside of the CD cover saying “I saw many happy and satisfied faces. People were interested and enjoyed it” by Balthasar Streiff/Hornroh. Michael Pilz actually summarized this video he said; “The beauty of this video is the confluent of different sound worlds and perspectives into one stream of positive energy in motion and in music. Its different approaches and qualities of filming are not defiance but on the contrary, they do reflect and underline the true character of parade as an adventure. What the video documentary reveals is that actually different parades were set up in one which moved sometimes parallel and some times even in the opposite direction in a cheerful, hilarious and pervasive way.”

Part of this DVD is a special tribute to Keith Goddard which lasts for four minutes. His dream come true, he slept a happy man. His expectations and desire were met. I quote his words. “I was more than I could have dreamed of. Their were moments of quite and others where musicians met, collided and passed each other. There were smiles on people’s faces; their were with musicians, surrounded by them, unseparated from them”. After a few months of saying these words, he passed on. Can we say, he was waiting for the parade to take place?”

There was a rousing party yesterday to conclude the European Capital of Culture in Linz - first at the Hafenhalle and later on the city’ s main square where the year 2009 was coming to a close. The pictures screened on the wall showed the highlights of last year with Parade definitely one of them. On behalf of Linz09 the director Martin Heller thanked all artists, partners, funders, staff and other stakeholders involved for the great achievements: “together we have made it to change Linz”.
There were also congratulations and greeting messages screened from the upcoming Cultural Capitals of Europe in 2010, Essen for the Ruhr area in Germany and Istanbul in Turkey. Tamas Szalay, the director of the third Cultural Capital 2010 Pecs in Hungary, was attending the function and brought across his warm welcome to visit the neighbors during these coming months.
Everybody agreed that Linz will remain a Cultural Capital of Europe since it has achieved so much especially in terms of self confidence and a wider horizon.
A number of projects will have lasting effects and build on the connections established like Parade which is stimulating further cultural exchange.

Bestellungen an: argezim@silverserver.at

“I enjoyed the whole spectacle of local Austrians being exposed to all sorts of different musical experiences that even people in the home countries of some of the performers never get to hear. It was an amazing juxtaposition of cultures” (Annette Eastwood, Harare / Zimbabwe).

Präsentation der Parade CD/DVD Dokumentation am 8., 9. und 10. Dez. 09 in drei Linzer Stadtteilen

They were all happy that their community is now known outside the country and that blowing a horn (“kusiba nyele” in Tonga language) can really take a person so far! (Josiah Moyo, Sinazongwe / Zambia). “I enjoyed the whole spectacle of local Austrians being exposed to all sorts of different musical experiences that even people in the home countries of some of the performers never get to hear. It was an amazing juxtaposition of cultures” (Annette Eastwood, Harare / Zimbabwe).

“It was more than I could have dreamed of. There were moments of quiet and others were musicians met, collided and passed each other. There were smiles on people’s faces; they were with the musicians, surrounded by them, unseparated from them.” (Keith Goddard)

DI 8. Dez., 18:00 Time’ s Up / Hafen Linz, Industriezeile 33b

MI 9. Dez., 18:00 HMH Rubblemaster / Im Südpark 196, Pichling

DO 10. Dez. 18:00 Freiwillige Feuerwehr Pöstlingberg, Samhaberstr. 50

Programm der Präsentation:

-> fotos von Werner Puntigam

Ab 10. Dezember wird das Parade Doku Paket auch im Linz09 InfoCenter am Linzer Hauptplatz und bei Extraplatte in Wien 9., Währingerstr. 46 erhältlich sein.

A Celebration of the life and work of Keith Goddard among BaTonga Musicians
‘LINZ PARADE’ - (Documentary film, Austria, May 2009)
The Mannenberg, Fife Ave, Harare
Thursday 12 November 2009, 6-7.30pm

As a celebration of the life and work of the late Keith Goddard, Pamberi Trust invites you to a film screening of the world music documentary ‘LINZ PARADE’, filmed with Keith and BaTonga musicians of Zimbabwe and Zambia in Austria in May 2009 - another fascinating collaboration between musicians of the world.

In October, a star flickered and died over Zimbabwe with the death of Keith Goddard, musician, composer, teacher, writer, human rights activist - a legend in his own time.

Keith was a promoter of cultural diversity and inter-cultural exchange for many years, and has always been in the forefront in pushing for tolerance and appreciation of cultural and sexual differences in society, and also actively involved in broader human rights campaigning and in the fight for access to affordable treatment for all people living with HIV/AIDS. He was a multi-faceted individual whose work and play made a strong impact on people across the colour, class and culture barriers throughout the world.

Keith was a brilliant pianist who studied Composition at Durham University. He also applied himself to traditional instruments and studied and played mbira, while exploring other African music forms. He taught at the Zimbabwe College of Music for many years, and founded the non-profit organisation Kunzwana Trust in the ‘eighties, whose mission statement is ‘to promote the work of Zimbabwean musicians and instrument-makers for fair reward’. Kunzwana later developed a strong partnership with the Austria-Zimbabwe Friendship Association (AZFA) headed by Peter Kuthan, which produced amazing artistic collaborations over the years, and resulted in life-changing development for many people.

In the early 90s, Keith boarded a rural bus from Entumbane in Bulawayo, in search of the legendary music of the ngoma buntibe of the Tonga people of the Zambezi Valley. He ended up in the Siachilaba area of the Binga district, where he met and was fascinated by the music of the music group ‘Simonga’.

He said of his first encounter: “I could hear no recurring pattern, sense no periodic rhythm and feel no beat despite the constant jogging on the spot by the horn players and singers. Everything happened in great swirls. I was caught inside a traffic jam of hooters and a whirlpool of women dancing and singing with great force. At times, the horn players would break away and move off into the distance, often dragging me or one of the film crew with them. When this happened, the drums would settle down to a modest tapping, keeping the basic pattern going. When the horns returned, their approach was welcomed by an upsurge in energy and the “cheerful noise” would start up once more. Although I was baffled by what I was hearing, the fifties avantgarde was a firm part of my soundworld and through my experience of it I seriously doubted that Tonga nyele was a random noise. Since then, over the past ten years, I have spent frequent though short stays in the area, mostly around Siachilaba, listening to Valley Tonga music and trying to come to grips with it.”

His engagement with Tonga Ngoma Buntibe music and it’s musicians led to ‘The Nyaminyami Festival: A Celebration of Valley Tonga Culture’ in 1997, which brought the music and culture of BaTonga to the cities of Zimbabwe and Austria, and rich cultural exchange between rural Zimbabwean musicians and modern Austrian composers. With the spotlight on the vivid and unique performance of the ngoma buntibe, the festival also worked to raise awareness of the richness of Tonga culture and help to expose and dispel harmful myths and legends surrounding this marginalised ethnic group.

The festival evolved into a community tourism project with the Siachilaba community, and provided a springboard for the Tonga.Online project which, in collaboration with AZFA, established computers and an Information Technology centre and recording studio at Binga High School, and later to Syanzyundu High and Siachilaba Primary Schools. The centres have served hundreds of Binga people and are still going strong in the face of huge challenges.

In the Binga area Keith was much-loved in the rural community, and maintained a close relationship with the Siachilaba group of musicians. For ‘Linz09’, he developed the PARADE concept in collaboration with Peter Kuthan, the latest and last of many extraordinary collaborations between the two which have brought musicians together from all over the world at various times over the last 15 years. He lived to experience it himself, along with a huge group of BaTonga musicians from Binga, Zimbabwe and Sinazongwe, Zambia, who joined ‘The Parade’ in Linz, Austria, the Cultural Capital of Europe 2009.

For three days (May 1-3), Linz encountered fascinating soundscapes from a variety of epochs and different corners of the world - the sounds of antelope horns, percussion instruments from the Tonga group, an Austrian brass band and zumari horns from Zanzibar met up with Swiss alphorn players, strolling balaphonists from West Africa and master drummers from the foothills of the Himalayas.

LINZ PARADE shows Keith dancing amongst his Tonga and Austrian friends to the rhythms of the Ngoma Buntibe and the exciting merger of sounds from different parts of the globe.

Keith’s cultural life was vivid and rich, and he is widely acclaimed in the world for his gift of music and composition. From small rural homesteads in Zimbabwe to state-of-the-art studios in Austria, by traditional musicians of Mozambique and jazz artists of Harare, he was revered as a gifted individual and a good human being.

Keith’s life was so full and active that the whole history may never be known by any particular group of friends and colleagues. But there are many, many people whose lives have been touched, and enriched, by knowing him. For all, he will always be fondly remembered, as by one close friend, ‘for his bad driving, his exceptional kindness, and his insistence on refilling my glass’.

The film screening of Linz Parade at The Mannenberg on Thursday 12 November will be it’s third screening in Zimbabwe, after its presentation in Binga to the artists involved. The film was produced by Peter Kuthan and Dariusz Kowalski for the Austria-Zimbabwe Friendship Association.

End of September the /Parade/ made it once more and somehow full circle to where the idea originated from: to the Tonga villages along the Zambezi river in Zimbabwe. In fact, the way the Tonga Ngoma Buntibe music uses space was the inspiration and core for the concept of “Parade” as designed by the late Keith Goddard and Peter Kuthan.

First, on 29th September in Binga at Tonga.Online office at the Binga library and then the next evening in front of Siachilaba bottlestore, the video documentary of Parade met great interest and rousing applause from a packed audience.

In Binga the local stakeholders and authorities recognised the promotion of Tonga culture abroad and the performance of the joint Tonga ensemble from both sides of the lake. A lively discussion followed if such exposure and random music is not diluting the essence of Ngoma Buntibe as spiritual music. This argument was countered with emphasis on the fact that Ngoma Buntibe is a dynamic concept which has always served for community entertainment and leisure too. Another issue coming up was that of decent and appropriate attire. Again this was seen mainly quite flexible as to be in accordance with a certain purpose, location and audience and nothing “authentic” at all.

In Siachilaba, especially with most Simonga members and lots of friends and families present, the documentary was revoking many pictures and memories of the long journey to Linz in Austria, the Cultural Capital of Europe.

Prior to the show the Simonga members sat together with Peter Kuthan and the Tonga.Online team who facilitated the tour and came up with abundant stories how fruitful the money earned in Europe was spent back home. It was not only welcomed as a significant increase in family income but also as a source for carefully planned investments like cattle, goats, a plough, a fishing net, household items or school fees.

Even the community benefited by the donation of soccer attire from Joachim and friends at Heim.Art. The sets were handed over to schools and teams in the area boosting a fresh drive of sporting exercise and enthusiasm.

Of course there was reason to celebrate this achievement with another splendid Ngoma Buntibe performance and lots of Chibuku beer.
