On Monday, 28th June, the Windhund musicians gathered in Vienna’s cultural quarter, the MuseumsQuartier, for a public farewell event – including their entourage, friends, family and partners of the tour, the Austrian Development Agency, Aktionsradius Augarten and Licht für die Welt. Bright sunshine, mellow breeze and three suitcases with gifts for the road…

Heidi Liedler-Frank of the Austrian Development Agency briefly introduced the Windhund members and the upcoming tour in front of the “Ke Nako – Afrika jetzt” pavillon temporarily set up in the main court of the MQ. The presentation was followed by a performance by Karl Ritter, Otto Lechner and Anne Bennent, who recited from Rimbaud’s poem “Drunken Boat”. The sails are set, the suitcases packed.

Gartenzwerge – garden gnomes – are a special chapter of Austrian everyday life. An icon of narrow-mindedness, cultivating one’s own garden, regardless of the world outside – yet, remember: it was a garden gnomewho travelled the world in the French movie “Amelie”!

And, as Augarten-vice-mayor Alois Kinast confirmed in his charming speech to the audience of the Bunkerei: the roots of mankind, and thus also of the garden gnomes, are in Africa. We shall find out more about this assumption very soon….

Vielleicht ist es unfair, zum Schreiben einer Konzert-Rezension Fela Kutis »Upside Down« auf dem Plattenspieler zu hören. Doch wie die Herausforderung der zugleich komplizierten und einfachen afrikanischen Rhythmen in den Schreibgriffel kriegen? Die grundsätzlichen Probleme, wenn europäische MusikerInnen afrikanische »begleiten« wollen? Ist es europäische Anmaßung mit den Triolen des Jazz und geraden Ansätzen aus dem Rock (ja, ich weiß um die schwarzen Wurzeln dieser Musikrichtungen) der Polyrhythmik und der polymorphen Atmosphäre mancher Sessions afrikanischer Musiker beikommen zu wollen?
»Sie hören schon, wir müssen noch ganz viel lernen. Melissa, Ritter und ich fahren im Juli nach Sansibar«, sagt Otto Lechner am Ende des Konzertes im Porgy & Bess. Wobei Otto ein Zuhörer ist, der sehr konzentriert auf die anderen achtet und zur Not sogar fröhlich Lärm produzieren kann auf seinem Akkordeon.

Bunkerei im Augarten, Montag, 28.6., 19.00 Uhr

Konzert mit Keba Cissokho I Edith Lettner  (Senegal, A)
Der Klang der 21‑saitigen Kora, Gesang und das gefühlvolle Saxophonspiel verschmelzen zu einem schwebenden Klang. Zwischen dem senegalesischen Griotmusiker und der „Jazzerin“ entwickelt sich eine gemeinsame Sprache, die sehr viel Raum offen lässt, um in die Musik einzutauchen.
Im Rahmen des Konzerts verabschiedet die Augartenstadt ihren Bürgermeister Otto Lechner & die Windhund Karl Ritter, Melissa Coleman und Anne Bennent, die zu einer dreiwöchigen Ostafrika Tournee aufbrechen und sich für grenzüberschreitende Projekte und Klangbrücken engagieren. Windhund ahoi!

Es ist Zeit! Der offizielle Slogan der FIFA lautet „Ke Nako. Celebrate Africa’s Humanity“. Ke Nako, ein Begriff aus der Sotho-Sprache bedeutet „Es ist Zeit“. Und das greift auch Ke Nako Afrika – Afrika jetzt! auf: Denn es ist an der Zeit, das verbreitete Afrika-Bild in Österreich zu hinterfragen. Ke Nako Afrika wird an vier Tagen Ende Juni auch im Augarten Station machen und interessante Künstlerformationen – jeweils zwischen den Fußballübertragungen – in den Bunkerei-Gastgarten bringen (bei Schlechtwetter indoor!). Die Bunkerei überträgt vom Auftakt am 11. Juni bis zum Finale am 11. Juli sämtliche Spiele der Fußball WM live auf Flatscreens und Video-Wall in zwei Räumen – bei jedem Wetter!

Die Ausstellung im Innenhof des Museumsquartiers soll unbekannte Seiten des Kontinents betonen // Auch Otto Lechner & Windhund werden dort am 28. Juni um 17h00 kurz aufspielen, bevor sie in der Bunkerei im Augarten verabschiedet werden und tags darauf zur Ostafrika Tour abreisen.

Wien (APA) – Modeschöpferinnen im Senegal, Filmproduzenten in Burkina Faso, kritische Theaterarbeit in Südafrika: In einem Ausstellungscontainer im Haupthof des Wiener Museumsquartiers (MQ) lädt die Österreichische Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (ADA) ab Dienstag, 8. Juni bis zum 11. Juli zu einer ungewöhnlichen Reise durch den afrikanischen Kontinent. “Ke Nako Afrika” nennt sich die Multimedia-Box in Anlehnung an den Slogan der Fußball-WM: “Es ist Zeit” bedeutet das auf Sotho – Zeit, Afrika auch einmal anders kennenzulernen.

“Fußball, das heißt zusammenspielen, das heißt Team sein – und das ist für das, was derzeit in Afrika passiert, ein gutes Motto”, sagte Außenminister Michael Spindelegger (V) bei der Eröffnung. Auch der südafrikanische Botschafter, Xolisa Mfundiso Mabhongo, betonte, dass Afrika als Ganzes die WM nutzen wolle “um die guten Nachrichten zu verbreiten: Von einem Afrika, das nach Fortschritt und Frieden strebt und das bereit ist für das 21. Jahrhundert”. Für die sechs afrikanischen Teams, die nach dem Anpfiff in drei Tagen um den WM-Titel spielen, drückten heute alle Beteiligten die Daumen.

Kunstschaffen, Lifestyle, urbanes Flair sind die Themen, mit denen man vor allem die übliche MQ-Laufkundschaft anlocken will. Zu hören gibt es neben Musik auch Literatur mit passenden Fotostrecken am Bildschirm: Henning Mankells “Chronist der Winde” kommt zu Wort, aber auch afrikanische Autoren wie die Senegalesin Fatou Diome. An fünf Abenden gibt es im MQ-Hof außerdem Live-Acts: Konzerte von SenElektrikeri (16.6.), Tshila und Celia Mara (23.6.) sowie Otto Lechner und Windhund (28.6.), eine Tanz-Performance des Chandiru Mawa Duos (30.6.) und eine Akrobatik-Show am 7. Juli mit Vituko Matata.

On Monday night, Otto Lechner & Windhund were – after successful performances in Linz and Graz – once more joined by the Zanzibari Zumari horns duo Sekembuke & Siga – the first occasion for the Viennese audience to experience the merging of two very different sonic spheres! With a sold out Porgy & Bess, the concert marked the beginning of the 6-days-festival “Began in Africa”.

After a mellow intro by Otto Lechner, Melissa Coleman, Matthias Jakisic, Karl Ritter and Peter Rosmanith, the two Zumari horn players entered by striding through the auditorium from the upper to the ground level… an effective entrée!

Especially in the second half of the gig, some great improvisational passages showed, that – though, as Otto Lechner stated, each concert with the Zumari horn musicians is like a completely new encounter – the traditional sounds of Zanzibar and the improvisation by the Austrian artists, provide a common ground for new explorations…
